Romanian author Eugen Chirovici has become a global sensation, after writing his first novel in English.
Publishers from 23 countries have fought to win the auction for Chirovici’s The Book of Mirrors, although US agents refused him. Publishers from UK and US bought the novel even before its publication, the Guardian reported.
Chirovici is 51 and has written 10 mystery novels in Romanian. His first book, called the Massacre sold over 100,000 copies. Chirovici worked most of his life as a journalist for the National Courier and as a TV producer. Overall, he published 10 novels and 5 books on history, economics and foreign affairs. He then moved to UK in 2012, where his son was studying, and decided to become a full-time writer.
The author was caught by surprise by the success and stated
He said: “I’m not sure I realise what’s happening. It is very overwhelming and unexpected.”
According to the Guardian, Rachel Mills said that the book is
“such an incredible novel, so sophisticated. You would never know it was written by someone whose first language wasn’t English.”
The book’s subject is set in the 1980’s in Princeton University and tells the story of how a professor is murdered.
