Sibiu has now officially received the title of the Region of Gastronomy in 2019. The county has received the title alongside with the South Aegean region of Greece.
The award was given for the cultural diversity and commitment to food.
Daniela Cimpean, the president of the Sibiu County council stated at the ceremony:
In the name of the Sibiu region and of Romania, I thank you for the honor of bearing in 2019 the title of European Region of Gastronomy. It is a special occasion to reinforce the European vocation of Romania and of its regions, to participate in the ‘European unity through diversity’ and to reaffirm the multinational character, multiethnic and multicultural of Sibiu.
Sibiu entered the bid for the title last year in July. For 2016 the winners were Catalonia region, Spain and Minho region, Portugal. For this year the winners are Aarhus-Central Denmark Region(Denmark), East Lombardy (Italy), and Riga-Gauja region (Latvia).
