Romanian photographer Vadim Ghirda has won the second prize at the World Press photo competition.
His photograph entitled” Migrant crossing” was taken on March 16, 2016 for Associated Press and has won the second place in the” Contemporary issues” category. The image shows a woman supported by two men while crossing a river in an attempt to reach Macedonia. In the day the photograph was taken hundreds of refugees were crossing the river because the border between Macedonia and Greece was closing.
The winning photo of the year was taken by Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici and it shows the moment the Russian ambassador in Turkey was killed.
80,408 photographs taken by 5,034 photographers have competed at the World Photo Contest in Amsterdam.
