A Romanian has become a successful and admired conductor in Spain. Conductor Virgil Popa is currently working with the Stradivari Simphony Orchestra in Madrid.
Popa has funded the orchestra 12 years ago and since then he has become famous among musicians in Spain. Virgil Popa grew up in a family of musicians and has previously studied piano and contrabass.His older brother taught him the first musical notions. When he was fourteen, he began to study double-bass at the Institute of Art Stefan Lucian in Botosani. He then studied double-bass at the George Enescu Univesity of Arts of Iasi.
He finaly fell in love with conducting because, he stated, playing an instrument you are integrated in the orchestra. However, when you conduct you are in front of people, you control the music, you create it and it is a different feeling. He studied conducting with Jorma Panula,Konrad von Abel and Enrique Garcia Asensio. The conductin technique he learnt it from Sergiu Celibidache.
