Anamaria Effler from Arad is part of the LIGO project that has received the Nobel prize for physics this year. The project has made observations in the field of gravitational waves.
Anamaria Effler is 33 years old and is one of the 1,000 researchers from 20 countries that participate in this project. The Nobel prize was given to Rainer Weiss, Kip S. Thorne and Barry C. Barish who lead the project.
Anamaria Effler was born in Arad and has studied at the Moise Nicoara college in Arad. During her school years she participated in physics olympiads and she was a national Olympic at physics.
After graduating she attended the prestigious California Institute of Technology. She said that she was part of a great generation which was deemed an elite one. She said that it is very important that you compete with elite people. She has been working for 10 years in this project and since she has graduated from her Ph.D. in Gravitational Physics she has been working for LIGO. Currently, she is working at the laser observatory at CalTech.
If you want to imagine how big is this project, I can tell you there have been days when I went home at 2 o’clock at night. It was a lot of work. I remember that some of those waves were detected in September, and until February we worked like crazy on the data and rechecking the data so we won’t publish fake news, because these are ones of the biggest discoveries that revolutionize the theory of the universe.
