For the first time in Romania, a vet doctor has performed the first surgical removal of the prostate in a dog. Doctor Alexandru Vitalaru, who is a university assistant at the Veterinary Medicine University in Bucharest was helped by Ion Dragomiristeanu, who is a surgeon at the dr. Theodor Burghele Urology Clinical Hospital.
The surgery was a success which means more and more animals will be able to get rid of prostate cancer, which is a spreading disease amongst dogs.
The 10-year-old dog has stayed in the hospital for 10 more days for recovery. Although Dr. Ion Dragomisteanu is a human doctor he loves animals and he wanted to contribute to vet surgery. His experience has helped vets learn how to perform cancer surgery.
