Young Romanians will be able to travel for free for 30 days thanks to the Interrail programme. The 30 days can be activated any time within a period of 3 years.
This project is financed by the European Community and it costs around 12 million euro at a community level. The European Parliament has voted for this project with 414 votes for and 163 votes against. Around 30,000 train tickets will be bought with the 12 million euros in the first year. Depending on the results, the programme might be extended after the first year.
Siegfried Muresan, the Romanian EU member of parliament has stated that the project will start on June 1st, 2018. The European Commision has to implement it and to propose a modality of executing the programme. Muresan would like the system to be on a first come first served basis and that the ticket to be able to be used within a period of 3 years depending on when the user wants to travel.
He also stated that negotiations with the train networks will have to be undertaken. Overall, the purpose of the project is to help European students to travel throughout Europe.
