Cluj charity creates an app to help donate food to people in need

As many statistics have shown, many countries in the European Union are wasting foods. 53% of the food wastage comes from individuals, 19% from food processing and 12% from food services.

A charity association called Warm Meal thought about changing this, although now only on a local level. In Cluj-Napoca, the association has created an app called ShareFood. Their purpose is to create a network where people can donate food and people can have free food.

The association created the Warm Meal programme 5 years ago. Until now, the project consisted in using certain ways of buying food for the charity. The association has managed to build up a network of food sources, such as restaurants, large and small supermarkets, producers and catering companies. As well, several charities and day centers are part of the network.

The app is available on a national level. So far donations and beneficiaries from Cluj-Napoca, Bistrita and Targu Mures have created accounts on the app.

The Warm Meal association has activities in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Bistrita, Satu Mare, Adjud and Constanta where they ensure around 900 weekly warm meals.
