Romania’s first lung transplant a success

Succesful medical firsts are always good news. Recently,  in Bucharest, on the 17th of April 2018, in “Sfânta Maria” (Saint Mary) hospital of Bucharest, the first successful lung transplant took place.

The surgical team was led by dr. Igor Tudorache and it took 7 hours to complete, with a one hour and a half break between the first and the second lung. The receiver is now stable and kept under close observation in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Saint Mary hospital, after being on the waiting list for the lung transplant for about one year.

The donor was a 46-year-old male who was categorized as brain dead. The lungs were collected from the donor on Tuesday, 16th of April 2018 at 23:30 and stored until the receiver could go into surgery for the transplant.

Dr. Igor Tudorache is also the head of the Hanovra Lung Transplant Center in Germany and he led the surgical and transplant team in this situation.The patient, Mugurel Amaritei, who has received the lungs, had a very fast recovery, being able to breathe on his own six hours after the surgery.
